For those of us with busy lives, exercise can be one of the first things to get the chop. You’re busy enough with work, family and just a tiny bit of ‘me time’ without thinking about pulling your active wear on when you’re actually already exhausted.

But even for those of us with a desk job, there actually is some great news when it comes to healthy living – you can easily ‘deskercise‘ without even waiting for your lunch break! Here’s how:

1. Take the stairs

Many people who work at a desk need to take an elevator to their floor. But have another think: do you really need to passively ride to work? Can’t you take the stairs instead? Stairs are one of the most effective cardio workouts, because it involves less impact than running but it can really get the heart pumping, especially if you take two or three steps at a time!

2. Stand up!

So your desk job involves a lot of sitting, which is not only extremely passive but bad for our backs as well. So here’s a very easy alternative: stand up! Many people are now using stand-up desks, while office teams are even organizing stand-up meetings. Standing burns significantly more calories than sitting, so if you have a choice, stretch out!

3. Work out the arms

If you spend a lot of time at your desk, it’s likely the only workout your biceps are getting is when that coffee cup is lifted towards your lips. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Use your full water bottle, or your stapler, and do some alternative ‘dumbbell’ reps to get some blood pumping and take some steps towards toned, strong arms.

4. Swivel chair workout

There are plenty more exercises you can do while sitting at work – because everyone wants good abs, but no one seems to have a lot of time to work on them. While you’re writing emails, contract and hold your abdomen. If you have a swivel chair, strengthen your core by doing reps of side-by-side swivels. There are plenty of other chair exercises you can do as well!

5. Walk, don’t email

These days, too many of us rely on modern communication methods when the traditional methods are just as effective – and much better for you. Find yourself emailing a co-worker who’s just down the corridor? Stretch your legs instead – just make sure you don’t make a pitstop at the vending machine!
