It is because of this that he earned the nickname “the Mad King.” Viserys grew up hearing stories about how terrible his father could be and how much better things were under Jaehaerys II’s rule. He must have felt very alone growing up as the only son of such a hated man.
Interestingly enough, though Viserys always spoke ill of his father while growing up, he seems to have inherited some of Aerys II’s more sociopathic tendencies himself. Like his father, Viserys does not hesitate to threaten or harm others in order to get what he wants – as we see when he threatens to kill Dany unless she agrees to marry Khal Drogo for him. He also shares his father’s love of violence; during their flight from Westeros after Robert’s Rebellion, Viserysis known to take pleasure in killing any wildlings they came across (despite Dany’s pleas for mercy).

We may never know who the Mad King’s parents are, but that doesn’t mean we can’t speculate. Based on the evidence in the blog post, it seems likely that they were either Targaryens or Lannisters. However, there is also a possibility that they were neither of these houses and instead belonged to a lesser-known house.
